Can you remember what’s at the back of your wardrobe?
If the answer is no, here are 3 wardrobe organisation hacks on how to get your wardrobe in order- and if that’s not enough, keep an eye out for my giveaway of the day at the end of this article for the opportunity to win one-on-one advice from a personal stylist on how to declutter your wardrobe.
1. Break it down to one thing a day and use a habit tracker.
Take one thing out of your wardrobe daily and ask yourself:
When was the last time I wore this?
Is this comfortable?
How does it make me feel?
Does it need to be altered?
Does this work with the rest of my clothes?
Would I buy this again?
Do I have more than 3 of the same thing and don’t need that many?
Does this bring me joy?
Once you have answers to these questions, there are 4 places it can go to:
Alter and keep
Sell
Donate
Recycle
A slightly different wardrobe organisation hack- Record it in a habit tracking journal. It will give you a little dose of dopamine, sending a pleasant signal to your brain which will make you want to repeat it the next day.
2. Stack your new habit on top of the existing habits.
The easiest way to stick to a new habit is to do it right after an already established existing habit. In our case you could do the new habit right after getting dressed in the morning or right after getting into your PJs in the evening – whichever is best for your lifestyle. You are already next to your wardrobe, it’s already opened - all you need to do is take one thing out. It might help to write yourself a message on the wardrobe door with the formula: Every time I get dressed in the morning (or get changed in the evening) I will take one item out of my wardrobe and decide what I want to do with it.
3. Make it obvious / visible.
Another trick to make the habit stick is making it more obvious. You can put a bright post-it note on the door of your wardrobe with the key words which will remind you to do the action. I also find it useful to switch the places where the post-it is – if it worked for you for a couple of weeks and all of a sudden you start forgetting to do the habit – switch where the post-it is. I use this trick to remind myself to brush my daughter’s hair after the bath. For a long time, the post-it was on her mirror, then both of us started forgetting to do it, so we moved the post-it into her PJs drawer – now every time she gets into her PJs she reminds me to do her hair.
Another way to make it obvious is to get an app where you can write down all the things you need to get done, including taking one thing out of the wardrobe a day. There is a brilliant one I highly recommend called Things.
It’s based on the book by David Allen “Getting things done”.
Follow these tips for wardrobe organisation and you might find an organised wardrobe in your room before you know it.
