When I work with clients or women in my style programme for speakers, I often point out that certain things are best suited for virtual events.
In fact, some things simply won’t work in real life, but look amazing virtually.
Here are 5 tips to follow when you are preparing for your online event:
1. Consider your background.
People aren’t just looking at you—they’re looking at the whole image in front of them. Are you using a real background, a virtual one, or perhaps a pop-up screen behind you? If your background is very dark, avoid wearing black or dark colors.
As a rule of thumb, avoid wearing the same color outfit as your background. The two colors likely won’t match exactly, and they might clash in texture or shade. This also applies if you are using a Zoom virtual background.
2. Texture.
Texture works well on screen - it makes the whole picture more interesting and versatile.
Consider trying these textures:
Jacquard
Velvet
Tweed
Corduroy
3. Make a statement.
Choose something with a statement collar, as this is predominantly what people will see.
4. Wear something that fits.
Make sure that whatever you are wearing fits you properly and doesn’t create unnecessary lines.
In the example below, I keep wanting to adjust the ribbon on this blouse and make it look straight. I’d much rather it wasn’t there. If you are speaking virtually, ensure nothing can come undone so that your viewers' attention remains fully on what you have to say. If something is off with your top, they WILL get distracted, whether consciously or unconsciously.
5. Colour.
As people on the other side of the screen can only see your top half and your face, it’s more important than ever to wear colors that suit your complexion.
Are you a warm or cool type?
Bright or muted?
Light or deep?
Once you know your colors, prioritize them online.
Need help figuring out your color palette? I offer a service for that, which can be done virtually.
6. BONUS ONE
Extra bonus tip: Avoid wearing a tube top 🤣.
