The Oscars 2021 Best Dressed reveals Coronavirus could never kill colour

The Oscars is always a night to remember. And this year was no different. Even with the adapted ceremony, distanced red carpet and no Vanity Fair after party, social distancing couldn’t take away from the sophistication of the looks at the Oscars 2021. This year, the red carpet was served with a well deserved bright awakening, with star’s looks matching the vibrancy of the collection of films nominated this year.

Admittedly, this was a different year, and some dressed for the scaled back event, such as Best Director winner, Chloe Zhang, who sported white sneakers on the red carpet. However, the majority at the 93rd annual Academy Awards dressed to impress, displaying some of the finest evening wear the industry had to offer this season. The ceremony seemed to wave goodbye to the days of waist-up fashion, with many opting for colourful full length gowns and a return to Hollywood Glamour.

As a Personal Stylist, I was excited to see the vibrancy of the industry beginning to return, and if this years ceremony showed us anything it’s that coronavirus could never kill colour on the red carpet. So, here are some of my brightest looks from this years brightest stars:

Perhaps the standout look from the evening, Zendaya certainly dressed like the rising young star that she is in her neon yellow Valentino gown. The goddess-like quality to the dress certainly nodded to the ‘goddess of pop’ herself, Cher, who once sported a strikingly similar look. Yet, Zendaya managed to add a layer of glamour to the look, balancing the light weight fabric with a whopping $6 million of diamond accessories, striking the perfect balance between delicacy and drama.

Do you ever wonder which colour to choose for yourself? It’s easy to make a mistake as there are lots of things to consider - are you a warm or a cool undertone? Do bright or muted colours suit you; dark or light? But not to worry, just book a free consultation with me, to get a taster of how I can help:

VIOLA DAVIS IN ALEXANDER MCQUEEN-

Viola Davis dazzled in an intricate Alexander McQueen design which she truly could get away with murder in (although I wouldn’t want to imagine getting a blood stain out of that dress!). The thistle and thorn detailing on the bodice reminded us of strong women Davis has played over the years, making her a true Alexander McQueen woman, a woman of beauty and bravery.

REGINA KING IN LOUIS VUITTON-

Regina King arrived looking like a modern day Cinderella in a custom Louis Vuitton dress that is reported to have taken over 140 hours to make. I’m sure King was thankful for the wing-structured sleeves following her brief tumble, as she continued through the ceremony with the same elegance as her butterfly inspired gown. King demonstrated another fantastic colour choice, with the powder blue gown complementing her skin tone oh so perfectly, whilst acting as an appropriate choice of colour for the spring date of this year's awards.

AMANDA SEYFRIED IN ARMANI-

Amanda Seyfried, who can always be relied on to bring Hollywood glamour to a red carpet, did not fail to impress this year. Seyfried opted for a jaw dropping Armani gown, designed by Giorgio Armani himself. The gown couldn’t be more fitting for the role Seyfried was nominated for, Jazz Age star Marion Davies, with the bright red of the dress bringing the black and white of Mank into the modern age.

The internet may have swooned over this dashing couples appearance, but the only thing I was swooning over was Fatima Farheen Mirza’s flawless ensemble. The novelists combination of an eye-catching turquoise Valentino Haute Couture gown with caping detail and red heeled sandals needed no accessories, showing that the right colours can create the most memorable style moments.

RENEE ZELWEGGER IN ARMANI PRIVE-

There was no resemblance to Bridget Jones in Renee Zellweger’s look for the 93rd Academy Award, she was the picture of elegance. Zellweger might have skipped the red carpet (we can forgive her, it was her 52nd birthday after all!) her gown was still one to remember, showing us that being middle aged doesn’t mean having a muted colour palette!

DANA MURRAY IN CHRISTOPHER JOHN ROGERS-

Love or loathe Dana Murray’s look this year, the animator certainly attracted attention with the interesting silhouette of her Christopher John Rogers gown.

Who could ignore Carey Mulligan’s show stopping style at this years ceremony? Wearing a couture piece from Valentino’s spring/summer 2021 collection, Mulligan walked across the red carpet like a figure from the Renaissance, and certainly reminded us just how promising this young woman is in the acting world.

Whether you loved or loathed my selection of the best dressed at the Oscars 2021, there is one thing we can all agree on- colour is back with a bang. Who can be surprised? I don’t know about you, but after spending a year in grey sweatpants I can’t wait enter summer in the brightest looks I can find!

However, colour can be daunting. It’s hard to know what clashes, what washes us out and what colour makes our eyes pop! I understand, it’s taken me years of personal styling to work out a formula for colour that truly works.

But there is no need to worry! Want to enjoy summer as the most colourful version of yourself without committing any fashion faux-pas? Book a free chat and we can come up with the plan together! No strings attached 🤗
