How To Choose A Neckline

Do you sometimes think:

“Nothing fits me”

This thought is a type of a cognitive distortion or an “unhelpful thinking style”.

It’s “Generalising the specific” according to CBT – making a general conclusion based on a single occurrence. Sometimes our brains take ‘short cuts’ and generate results that are not completely accurate.

And in this case, the statement "Nothing fits me" is DEFINITELY not completely accurate, as there IS stuff out there which will fit you and make you shine, you just need to know what it is.

Lets start with the necklines.

Today, I’m going to show you step-by-step, how to work out your shoulder shape and how to choose the right neckline for your shoulders.

To assess your shoulder type, make sure to take a picture at the chest level, standing up straight so your shoulders look symmetrical. You can do something similar to what I did in the image below, either by printing out the picture and drawing a triangle or doing it digitally - whatever is easiest for you. It will help you visually to determine what your shoulders are like.

Once you draw the triangle, notice how wide that angle is. The wider it is, the more sloped your shoulders are. Notice how straight the shoulders on the left are and how small the triangle is and how much wider the triangle on the left is - therefore the shoulders are sloped.

And now that you know your shoulder shape, look at the below suggestions:

  1. Straight shoulders:

V-neck will help you visually to break down the straight line

Similarly, if you make sure that the oval is definitely vertical, rather than horizontal, it will serve the same purpose as the V-neck.

Halter neckline has an inbuilt slope in it, so it will visually bring your shoulders into balance.

2. Sloped shoulders:

The square line will show off your collar bones and will bring your shoulder-line into a perfect balance.

Boat or Bateau neckline will serve the same purpose as the square neckline

Sabrina neckline is similar to the boat neckline, just with a straighter line across

NOTE: V-neck works well for both sloped and straight shoulders.

Hope this has been helpful! What shoulder line have you got?
