5 things to consider when wearing a silk scarf

I hear these statements all the time:

“I’ve got a great big selection of silk scarves”

“I love lifting up my outfit with a nice scarf”

“I just throw on a scarf with my colours to brighten up my outfit”

“Wearing different scarves is my signature style, that’s how people remember me”

It sounds great in theory, however, there are a lot of pitfalls I’d like you to avoid.

Just wrapping a nice scarf around your neck with any outfit to lift it up will NOT work. It might make you look frumpy.

It’s imperative that you think about the whole look and how it all ties together. Make sure that:

  • The scarf looks neat and doesn’t look floppy;

  • The way you tie it and what you combined it with makes the look contemporary;

  • The colours of the scarf go well together with the rest of the outfit (if in doubt, go black with the rest of the outfit);

  • The rest of the outfit isn’t made out of cheap jersey. Don’t just hide bad clothes under an expensive scarf;

  • Your neck is open and isn’t cut off by a scarf.

I’ve created moodboards with some good and bad examples here:
